Signs Your Skin Care Routine Isn’t Working Anymore, And What To Do About It

Sabra K / Feb 07, 2016

At some point, you found the perfect combination. You found the right cleansers, moisturizers and skin treatments to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

And now it isn’t working.

You may not realize it at first. You may not understand why you are suddenly breaking out, why you are getting flakes, or why your skin appears so dull and tired. You may even find that you are getting a rash, or experiencing some other kind of skin problem. You haven’t started using anything new, so what could be the problem?

The problem is that you have outgrown your skin care routine, but why?

There are a number of reasons why your old products and routine are no longer working. Over time, your skin begins to change. The routine that worked for you in your 20’s may not work in your 30’s. The routine you are using in your 30’s may not work for you in your 50’s. Other culprits can include pregnancy or other hormonal changes. Moving to a new climate also wreaks havoc on your skin.

Skin Allergies And Resistance

If you are experiencing redness, itching, dryness or breakouts, you may have developed an allergy to a product you are using. This hardly seems fair, but it does happen.

Also, if you regularly use products for acne or other conditions, your skin can develop a resistance to them. For example, anti-bacterial treatments for acne can lose their effectiveness over time.

How To Deal With This Problem

Elimination is the key to determining allergies. Stop using everything aside from a gentle, hypoallergenic cleanser. Once your skin clears up, add one product back at a time, for no less than one week before moving on to the next product.

In order to find a skin care routine that works for your maturing skin, new climate or temporary changes, such as pregnancy, you have to play around a bit. Try minimizing as much as possible, use gentle products, and try products that are for your current skin care needs, not what worked 15 years ago.
