When fall arrives, we can all go back to shaving our legs whenever we feel like it, but for now, while the weather is still warm, shaving is virtually a daily ritual. Unfortunately, frequent shaving can have uncomfortable consequences. As you know, when you shave often, it usually results in uncomfortable razor burn, a rash, ingrown hairs and other skin irritation. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can stop this from happening.

Be Mindful of The Type of Razor You Are Using:

Many razors today boast four or five blades for a closer shave. However, while it sounds good, such a blade might irritate already sensitive skin even more. This happens because the five blades cut down to the subdermal layer of the skin. This can cause ingrown hairs and irritation. If your skin is sensitive, going with a more basic razor with just three blades will actually give you a more comfortable shave than a razor with all the bells and whistles.

Use The Right Shaving Cream:

If you are in a hurry trying to get out the door, it can be tempting to shave with just water. However, this is a big no, no. You should always lather up with a good shaving cream before shaving. If you are out, opt for conditioner, but avoid bar soap as this will just dry you out worse. Also, make sure any shaving cream you use is alcohol and fragrance free, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Shave In The Right Direction:

Most of us were taught by our moms to shave against the grain. This was supposed to give us a closer shave. However, in reality, you should be shaving in the direction your hair grows. Shaving against the grain, or opposite the way hair grows, causes much of the irritation experienced with shaving.

Use Both Hot And Cold Water:

Use warm or hot water before shaving. After you are done, rinse with cold water. This closes the hair follicles and prevents ingrown hair and irritation.

These tips will ensure you can shave without irritation, until cold weather arrives.
